Unwinding The
Fascia

The three methods that I offer all work to unwind restriction and tension held within the body - and in particular the fascial system. Foundation Training opens and realigns the physical body, Somatic Therapy unwinds and releases emotional tension, and Indirect Myofascial Release eases both physical and emotional restriction in the deep fascial layers.

What is

FOUNDATION
TRAINING?

A movement practice for a stronger, more resilient frame.

Foundation Training is a simple yet transformative movement practice that may look similar to yoga or Pilates but feels completely different, and understands the body in a unique way!

Working with the body as a whole, it uses innovative exercises to untangle fascial restrictions and activate deep postural muscles - often dormant and neglected - that are essential for the efficient functioning of all our systems.

Compression and restriction in the body - often caused by prolonged sitting, screen use, injury, or physical and emotional trauma - causes stagnation, pain and illness. Foundation Training works to unwind these restrictions, decompressing the body and rebuilding deep, balanced strength for a healthy, resilient frame.

Muscle Chains
As shown in Anatomy Trains, our muscles - often seen as separate parts - are actually arranged in continuous chains, encased in fascia, that span the entire body. When coordinated, these myofascial lines work together to disperse load and support space within the skeleton - essential for healthy movement, circulation, digestion, breathing, and the flow of nerves, lymph and energy.

Foundation Training works with these chains as a whole, building the balance and coordination needed for the muscular system to support a spacious, well-aligned frame.
Tensegrity
Tensegrity describes how the body's posture is maintained by a continuous web of balanced tension. This means that when there's a restriction somewhere, the rest of the body has to adjust and compensate, causing overload in certain areas, which leads to pain. For example, lower back pain often stems from imbalances at the hips, knee pain from miscommunication between the feet and hips, and neck tension from restriction in the ribcage and diaphragm. This is why Foundation Training treats the body as a whole rather than focusing on the site of pain - relieving the root cause of the imbalance.
Movement Patterns
Our bodies are built with alternating sites of mobility and stability: mobile feet, stable knees, mobile hips, a stable lower back, a mobile thoracic spine, a stable neck, and a mobile joint where the skull meets the spine (C1/C2). Pain and injury usually show up initially at the stable sites - the knees, lower back and neck. Why? Because when movement patterns at the mobile sites - feet, hips, ribs and head - are poor, the stable sites are relied on to prop us up. These joints then end up absorbing excessive load that they’re not designed for, breaking down and becoming sore. Foundation Training restores healthy movement patterns at the mobile sites, relieving the reliance on the stable areas and dispersing the load throughout the muscular system thats designed to absorb it.

“I am now completely asymptomatic with a full range of movement. To be clear that means I have gone from being days away from back surgery, unable to walk, stand, sit and sleep to a full recovery in a couple of months – without the operation. ”

Indirect Myofascial Release is a simple hands-on technique that is able to access and unwind deep layers of restriction in the body.

Through gentle traction of the arms, legs or neck, the fascia begins to move on its own, and we simply support and follow this natural unwinding process. Because the fascial system is continuous throughout the body, we can use the limbs to influence fascial tension as deep as the organs.

What is

INDIRECT MYOFASCIAL
RELEASE?

A manual technique to release deep layers of tension.

The therapy is done fully clothed, lying face-up on a massage table, with no pressure or manipulation. Twitching, shaking, tingling, warmth, shivers or surfacing emotions are all a normal part of this process, and you'll leave feeling as if you've had a deep massage.

The Fascial Layer
We're far more used to the feeling of muscular sensation than to that of the fascia, and tend to bypass this subtler layers when we focus solely on the muscles. Fascia is a substance that, when healthy, is malleable and hydrated, allowing our joints and muscles to move freely. Under stress, it can rigidify becoming grainy, dense and brittle restricting the muscles, joints and organs it surrounds. Because it forms one continuous, whole-body web, a restriction in one area can pull on and affect areas far beyond it. To restore malleability, the fascia needs to unwind and release the restrictions it holds, allowing it to rehydrate and regain its natural elasticity.
Unprocessed Emotions Stored in the Fascia
Fascial health is affected both by physical and emotional stress. When the body isn't able to fully process a stressful or emotional experience at the time, that energy gets held in the fascial system as tension or bracing, causing physical or emotional discomfort long after the original experience has passed. This is because fascia is richly supplied with nerve endings, making it one of the most sensory tissues in the body, closely linked with the nervous system. Indirect Myofascial Release works with this directly by gently accessing and unwinding these restrictions, it can allow held emotion to surface and move through, rather than staying locked in place.
The Body Leads the Way
Unlike direct myofascial techniques, which apply pressure or stretch to create release, this indirect approach allows the body to unwind in whichever way it needs. A light traction is applied and held, and rather than pushing the tissue in a chosen direction, we simply follow wherever it wants to go supporting the body through its own process.

Because the body is leading the way, it is able to access layers well below the surface, reaching restrictions unreachable through more direct techniques that we are not even aware of.

“I was unsure what to expect from MFR, and was initially surprised at the spontaneous movement of my body. But as I settled into it, I felt tension releasing that I didn't even know I was holding. It was different from the muscular relief of a traditional massage - it completely quietened my mind and allowed me to deeply let go. ”

What is

SOMATIC
THERAPY?

A body-centred therapy to restore nervous system regulation.

Somatic Therapy is a body centred approach to trauma and stress that works with the fascial and nervous systems to release emotional tension and disease.

When we face a threatening or overwhelming experience, our nervous system mobilises energy to fight, flee, or freeze. If this energy isn't fully discharged once the danger has passed, it can remain held in the fascia and nervous system, keeping the body on guard long after the event itself.

Unlike talking therapy, Somatic Therapy focuses on the sensations present in the body as you connect to the memories, feelings or emotions causing discomfort.

I'll help you stay with these sensations, guiding you into small movements to support the process. By allowing this stored energy to complete its natural cycle, the nervous system can return to a state of regulation, safety and presence.

The Body Remembers
Our nervous system, which develops in utero right up until around age 7, holds the imprint of our lived experiences. Experiences of stress, fear or disconnection during this developmental stage when a child's nervous system is dependent on connection for survival shape the strategies we adopt to stay safe. These strategies stay with us and continue to rule our reactions into adulthood.

This is why a reaction can feel disproportionate to what's actually happening in the present moment. The body isn't only responding to now - it's replaying a learned response, one that was once necessary for survival, even if it no longer fits the situation at hand. The past isn't just remembered in the mind; it's held, quite literally, in the fascia and nervous system of the body.
Beyond Understanding
Talking therapy can help us understand where a reaction comes from - and that understanding can be useful. But insight alone rarely changes the reaction itself. You can know exactly where something comes from and still find yourself doing it the next time you're triggered. This is because the pattern lives in the nervous system, which reacts far quicker than our conscious mind.

Somatic Therapy works directly with our reactions, observing them as they arise, and following them through to completion. By working with the body, we address the source of the activation, and in doing so, can change the way we respond to triggers in the moment.
Returning to Regulation
When the nervous system is stuck in a stress or fear response, it's very difficult to be truly present. Attention gets pulled toward past events or future threats real or anticipated leaving little capacity to be still enough in ourselves to meet what's actually here, now.

As stored activation is able to move and discharge through the body's fascia and nervous system, it has the chance to settle into a more regulated state. From here, presence becomes possible again as the body no longer needs to brace against a threat that has already passed.

“Somatic therapy has been a game-changer for me. It's been eye-opening to realise how disconnected I can be from my body's sensations. It has been a deep journey of releasing tension and emotion from my body, and Mora has been a great guide – patient, kind, and always with the right supportive word. ”
